Latitude Fatitude (Geography)

Hey students! Do you need more help with latitude and longitude? You've come to the right place.

Before you start practicing, remember what we learned in class...

LATITUDE FATITUDE!(Picture Ms. Faase being goofy)

This helps us remember that if we were a globe, latitude lines would run the direction of our belts, or horizontally, or from east to west.

LOOOOOOOOONG LONGITUDE! (Again, picture the goofiness)

If we are still imagining ourselves as a globe, our fingers show that longitude lines run from head to toe, or vertically, or north and south.

A few more tips to remember:

1. Latitude lines run east and west on a globe, but they measure degrees north and south of the equator.
2. Longitude lines run north and south, but they measure degrees east of west of the prime meridian.
3. The line of latitude is always going to be listed first in the coordinate pair. For example, a point would be 20 degrees S latitude, 39 degrees W longitude.

The more practice you get, the better you will understand! Have fun:)

Online Practice Games:

Practice 1: Pirate's Booty
Use your knowledge of latitude and longitude to find treasure!
Practice 2: Test Your Speed!
Use your knowledge of latitude and longitude to discover points on a map, but be quick! You're being timed...

Practice 3: Go Back in Time!
If you are up for a real challenge, discover how sailors found their longitude using a clock and some mathematical skill!  This practice is difficult, but try it out!
